CONDITIONS OF UNDERTAKING STUDIES AT GDYNIA MARITIME UNIVERSITY
BY FOREIGNERS IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2010/2011
PRINCIPLES
Foreigners may undertake studies at Gdynia Maritime University in accordance with the regulations set out in the Higher Education Act of 27 July 2005 (Dz.U. No 164, item 1365 of 2005) and the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 12 October 2006 on undertaking studies and courses and participating in research and development work by foreigners (Dz.U. No.190, item 1406 of 2006).
Under the regulations applying to Polish citizens studies may be undertaken by:
- foreigners who were given permission to settle in Poland;
- foreigners with refugee status granted in the Republic of Poland;
- foreigners with temporary protection status on the territory of the Republic of Poland;
- migrant workers: citizens of Member States of the European Union or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – contracting parties of the European Economic Area provided that they are or were employed in Poland, their family members provided that they live on the territory of the Republic of Poland;
- foreigners who acquired the EU long-term resident permit on the territory of the Republic of Poland;
- foreigners who acquired the temporary resident permit (pursuant to Art. 53.1.7, Art. 53.1.13 and Art. 53.1.14 of the Foreigners Act of 13 June 2003 – Dz. U. No. 128, item 1175 as amended);
- citizens of Member States of the European Union or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – contracting parties of the European Economic Area and their family members having financial resources indispensable for covering the costs of living in the course of their studies; these applicants, however, are not entitled to maintenance grants, grants for the disabled, accommodation grants, food allowance and student aids;
- applicants go through the recruitment process.
Remaining foreigners can undertake studies omitting the process of recruitment on the basis of:
- international agreements in line with the provisions set out in these agreements;
- agreements entered into with foreign entities by the institutions of higher education in line with the provisions set out in these agreements;
- a decision of the minister responsible for higher education or the relevant minister
- the vice-chancellor’s decision.
The foreigners in question can undertake studies:
- as scholarship holders of the receiving institution (Poland);
- paying tuition fees;
- paying no tuition fees and getting no scholarship;
- as scholarship holders of a sending institution with no tuition fees incurred;
- as university scholarship holders.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarship holders of the receiving institution (Poland) are granted a scholarship by the minister responsible for higher education. The minister establishes its amount.
Foreigners of Polish origin applying for a scholarship awarded by the Government of the Republic of Poland should contact the Polish Embassy or the Polish Consulate at their permanent residence to receive further information concerning the scholarship mentioned above.

STUDIES IN POLISH
Satisfactory knowledge of Polish is a prerequisite for admission to the university. International candidates may gain admission to the BSc and supplementary MSc studies, uniform MSc studies taught in Polish provided that:
- they complete a one - year Polish preparatory course for candidates who plan to undertake studies in units designated by the minister responsible for higher education,
- they are awarded a certificate in Polish as a foreign language issued by Państwowa Komisja Poświadczania Znajomości Języka Polskiego jako Obcego,
- they are given a confirmation from the university that the level of their knowledge of Polish makes it feasible for them to undertake studies in Polish.

A course fee includes the cost of:
- tuition EURO 3 000
- a one – month accommodation EURO 90
- a one – month full board EURO 210
Foreigners of Polish origin are given a discount of 30%.
The payment for intramural studies in non-marine and marine specializations amounts to EURO 5000 and EURO 6000 per annum respectively, expressed in PLN according to the table of average EURO exchange rates in the National Bank of Poland and the equivalent of EURO 200 as a non-returnable registration fee.
Tuition fees in PLN must be paid in advance by bank transfer to the university’s account or at the cash office for the whole academic year. Candidates of the Polish origin are entitled to a 30% discount.
STUDIES IN ENGLISH
There is a possibility of intramural or extramural studies in English. The necessary condition for undertaking such studies is a sufficient number of candidates, which is determined by the Dean of the Faculty of a given specialization. The payment for the studies is established annually by the Dean of the Faculty. Fees must be paid in EURO into the bank account for the whole academic year in advance. The terms of payment are subject to the legal contract.
The admissions commission of the respective Faculty will conduct the admissions process for candidates.
ACCOMODATION
Students may be provided with accommodation at Gdynia Maritime University’s Student Hostel in shared rooms. The type of a room depends on the availability of rooms currently being at the Dean’s disposal. The cost amounts to EURO 75-100 per month. At the campus there is a canteen open from Monday to Sunday; an average meal costs about EURO 4.
DOCUMENTS
Candidates for the first year must submit the following documents by the date announced by the admissions commissions of the respective Faculties:
- The original school-leaving certificate containing an authorization (legalization seal) issued by the appropriate Polish Foreign Service and translated by a certified translator.
- The document officially recognizing the school-leaving certificate issued in a foreign country confirming its equivalence to the Polish school - leaving certificate
- A health certificate confirming suitability of a candidate to study in a given field. The health certificate should be issued by a certified doctor in Poland.
- Candidates for marine specializations – an international seamen's health certificate appropriate for the specialization a candidate chooses. The health certificate should be issued by a certified doctor in Poland.
- Candidates cover the expenses of medical examinations and certificates.
- A certificate of completing the Polish language course or a confirmation of the Polish Language competence (refers to studies in Polish).
- A completed form of a personal details questionnaire.
- 4 photos for passport.
- A receipt of non-refundable registration fee of EURO 200.
- An insurance policy in case of illness or accident for the period of studies in Poland or the European Health Insurance Card.
ACCEPTANCE FOR STUDIES
After completing successfully the admissions process and paying the appropriate fees for the 1st year of studies, a candidate receives a certificate of being accepted for the studies.
By the definite term announced by the Dean’s office of the respective Faculty, a student-to-be is obliged to submit a visa, resident permit or some other document entitling them to stay in the territory of the Republic of Poland.
The final decision concerning the admission for studies is made after undersigning a legal contract between the candidate and the University.

The aforementioned documents should be submitted directly in the respective Dean’s Office depending on the specialization a student-to-be applied for.
The decision to accept an applicant for the studies is taken by Vice Rector for Education.
