History of the Gdynia Maritime University
12 June 1920
The Maritime Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs allocated 247 000 dollars for the purchase and repair of the "Nest" - three mast tall ship to serve the Marine School in Tczew as a training vessel.
17 June 1920
General Józef Leśniewski, the Minister for Military Matters signed a deed establishing the Maritime School in Tczew. The School Management and the Pedagogic Council were established? On the first June that year Admiral Kazimierz Porębski, Head of the Department for Maritime Matters appointed Antoni Garnuszewski to a position of the Director. Captain Gustaw Kański, Master Mariner was appointed the Maritime School Inspector and Manager of the Faculty of Navigation. Mr. Kazimierz Bielski, Engineer was nominated to a position of the Manager of the Faculty of Marine Engineering.

4 September 1921
Celebrations to christen the training vessel "Lwów". The first officer in command of the vessel was Captain Tadeusz Ziółkowski, Master Mariner. On this occasion the ladies-inhabitants of the City of Lwów embroidered the vessel’s flag.

"Lwów" crossed the Equator and the event was accompanied by the "Taste of the Sea Ceremony" for those crossing the Equator for the first time.

Ignacy Mościcki, President of the Republic of Poland set a memorial plaque inaugurating construction of the Maritime School Premises in Gdynia.
January 1929
The first statutes of the Maritime School in Tczew was approved. They were effective till 1939. The Maritime School was defined as a school of higher professional education.

Ceremony of the First Hoisting of the Flag on board "Dar Pomorza" Tall Ship accompanied by her christening. The Godparents were Maria Janta-Połczyńska and Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski.

"Dar Pomorza" set sail for her first training voyage to North America.
16 September 1934 - 3 September 1935
"Dar Pomorza" made a round world voyage. The vessel covered 38 746 Nautical Miles, visited 23 ports and four times crossed the Equator. In 1937 Captain Stanisław Kosko, Master Mariner, a graduate from the Maritime School in Tczew, a Dar Pomorza Officer published a book on the voyage entitled "Across Three Oceans".
18 August 1939
"Dar Pomorza" set sail for the training voyage across the Baltic Sea with candidates to the Maritime School and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year-students of the Faculty of Navigation and junior sailors with a total number of 161 persons (including 21 crew) on board. According to Captain S. Kosko, Master Mariner - School Director ‘s instructions upon the break of war the vessel had to be interned and remain in a neutral port until the end of the war. The Tall Ship and part of the crew returned to Poland on 25 October 1945.
2 December 1939
The employees of the State Maritime School residing in Great Britain under the leadership of Captain Kowalski, Master Mariner, Officer in Command of the "Dar Pomorza" submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Trade a Draft Project to organise the Maritime School in England.
As early as in December that year officer qualifying courses were inaugurated for the State Maritime School students and seafarers first in Southampton and then in London. According to Mr Jan Kazimierz Sawicki’s estimations a total of 318 officers were educated for the Polish Merchant Marine.
11 April 1945
The Department for Maritime Matters of the Ministry of Industry authorised Captain Konstanty Maciejewicz, Master Mariner to take over the school premises and start up activities to reactivate activities of the State Maritime School. Due to the repair work the school year was inaugurated on the 1 November that year.
8 December 1945
The 25th Anniversary of the School was celebrated in Gdynia. On this occasion traditional Maritime Ball was organised with very solemn Mazurka Dance.
17 June 1946
"Dar Pomorza" set sail for her first post-war seagoing voyage with candidates to the School and students of the Faculty of Navigation of the State School in Gdynia under the command of Captain Stefan Gorazdowski, Master Mariner. The vessel went to Stockholm to have demagnetisation performed.
1 September 1947
Under a decision of the Minister of Shipping and Foreign Trade the State Maritime School in Szczecin was established to educate navigators with a prospect to function as a separate school. K. Maciejewicz was appointed the Director. The Faculty of Marine Engineering was left in Gdynia with Engineer Antoni Garnuszewski as the Director.

Mieczyszław Jurkiewicz, M.A. - Head of the Maritime Education Department of the Ministry of Shipping was appointed by the Minister of Shipping the Vice-Director of the State Maritime School in Gdynia. On the 1 August that year he took over the position of the State Maritime School Director.
23 June, 1 August 1951
Under an Ordinance issued by the Presidium of the Polish Government and the Ministry of Shipping the State School in Gdynia and the State School in Szczecin were restructured into the 5-year secondary technical schools. That fact resulted in a considerable lowering of the educational level and age of the students. Maritime-Navigation Secondary Technical School was established in Szczecin and Maritime-Mechanical Engineering Secondary Technical School was established in Gdynia. The post-matura (A-level examinations) education was restored in the school year 1956/1957. Students with the A-level examinations already passed were admitted for the 3.5 year studies. The traditional name of the State Maritime School was also restored.

Under an ordinance of the Minister of Shipping the State Maritime School obtained a statute being in force until 1968.
25-26 September 1965
45-th anniversary of the School was celebrated in Gdynia. The celebrations were accompanied by a rally of training vessels of the Gdynia State Maritime School, the Szczecin State Maritime School, the Gdynia and Szczecin State Schools of the Deep Sea Fishing and other vessels. A reunion of graduates residing in Poland was also organised. It was the first meeting within such a wide circle of former students under the State Maritime School roof after World War II.

Administrative fusion occurred to integrate two schools: the State Maritime School in Gdynia and the State School of the Deep Sea Fishing. The State Maritime School took over the premises of the State School of the Deep Sea Fishing located at Skwer Kościuszki, a super-trawler "Jan Turlejski" (sailing with the State Maritime School students till 1985) and unfinished building of the student hostel at ul. Sędzickiego.

The Official Journal of the Polish Parliament published an Ordinance by the Council of Ministers of 20 August 1968 on restructuring the State Maritime Schools in Gdynia and Szczecin into Maritime Academies.

The Senate of the Gdynia Maritime Academy adopted a resolution to name the school lecture hall after Captain Tadeusz Meissner, Master Mariner, the Gdynia Maritime School graduate, Member of the Polish Parliament and lecturer at the Gdynia Maritime School.

"Dar Pomorza" won two-stage regattas "Operation Sail 80". The Commanding Officer of the vessel Captain Tadeusz Olechnowicz, Master Mariner was decorated by the Queen of Netherlands with a prestige award of the "Cutty Sark Trophy".

"Dar Pomorza" completed her last voyage to Finland.

A new tall ship "Dar Młodzieży" was launched at the Gdańsk Shipyard named after Lenin. The Godmother of the ship was Helena Jurkiewicz, wife of the many years’ standing Commanding Officer of "Dar Pomorza" Kazimierz Jurkiewicz.

"Dar Młodzieży" set sail for her first voyage under the command of Captain Tadeusz Olechnowicz and the students of the Gdynia Maritime Academy. During the voyage the ship participated in "Operation Sail 82" along the route: Rostock, Falmouth, Lisbon, Vigo, Southampton, Bremerhaven, Gdynia.

"Dar Pomorza" was transferred by the Gdynia Maritime Academy to the Central Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. The first custodian of the ship was Captain Kazimierz Jurkiewicz, the many years’ standing Commanding Officer of the ship.
31 March - 31 July 1984
"Dar Młodzieży" participated in regattas commemorating 450 anniversary of the expedition by a French sailor Jacques Cartier. The Tall Ship was the winner in the regattas on the route: Brest-Las Palmas-Hamilton and Hamilton-Halifax.

The Senate of the Gdynia Maritime Academy approved the first Academy Statute during the term of office of Captain Władysław Rymarz, Master Mariner, D.Sc. as the Rector.

"Dar Młodzieży" participated in Operation Sail 86" calling the ports of Newcastle, Bremerhaven, Larvick, Goeteborg.
3 September 1987 - 1 June 1988
"Dar Młodzieży" under the command of Captain Leszek Wiktorowicz, Master Mariner completed a round the world voyage crossing the Equator. Particular impression was made when the Tall Ship entered the Port of Sidney under full sails, where a parade of tall ships took place.

70-th anniversary of the civil maritime education in Poland was celebrated at the Gdynia Maritime Academy. The anniversary was accompanied by a scientific session, historical celebrations and the meeting of the Academy Senate.

The Gdynia Maritime Academy Senate restored celebrations of the School Feast on 8 December which were organised until the World War II in Poland, in England during the War and until 1950 in the reactivated State Maritime School in Gdynia, and then occasionally. During the celebrations of the 8 December Feast the Association of the Maritime Schools Graduates was established with its President Lech Rezler, Marine Engineer Officer Class One.

The First General Meeting of the Association of the Maritime Schools Graduates was held. Lech Rezler, Marine Engineer Officer Class One was elected the President of the Association.

Upon the initiative of the Association of the Maritime Schools Graduates, the Academy’s Governing Bodies, the Polish Nautological Association and others a monument to Admiral Kazimierz Porębski, the founder of the Polish maritime education system. Grażyna Kilarska, an artist painted a portrait of Kazimierz Porębski.

Celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Gdynia Maritime Academy were inaugurated. One of the events was a "launching" of a book under the editorship of J.K. Sawicki entitled "The Maritime Personnel of the Polish Republic"; Volume I "The Polish Merchant Marine. Graduates of Maritime Schools 1922-1992" containing, for the first time in the history, a list of the School graduates from its very beginnings to the 90s.

"Dar Młodzieży" participated in "Operation Sail 94" winning First Place in Class "A" (tall ships) along the route from Weymouth through Porto to St. Malo.

"Dar Młodzieży" called Osaka under command of Captain Henryk Śniegocki, Master Mariner, M.Sc. During "Osaka Sail 97" regattas "Dar Młodzieży" was the winner in Class A and also in general scoring. The Tall Ship was decorated with the Osaka Mayor’s Award.

"Dar Młodzieży", after her return from Osaka to Gdynia, entered the waters of the Gdańsk Bay and participated in the regattas organised to celebrate the Gdańsk Millennium. The Ship berthed at the Westerplatte Quay.

The Central Commission for Scientific Titles and Scientific Grades awarded the Faculty of Business Administration the rights to award a scientific degree of a doctor in economic sciences in the domain of the knowledge of commodities.

The GMA Senate adopted a resolution to lie up the two instrument vessels: "Horyzont" (as from 30 May 1999) and "Zenit" (as from 31 August 1999). The vessels had been operated since the beginning of the 60s by the State School of the Deep Sea Fishing, and since 1 January 1969 by the Gdynia Maritime Academy.

The Godmother was Hanna Gronkiewicz Waltz, President of the National Bank of Poland. The first Ship’s Master was Julian Witkowski, Master Mariner, M.Sc. Eng., many years’ standing Commanding Officer of "Horyzont" vessel. The new vessel was built in the Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard named after Józef Piłsudski.

"Dar Młodzieży" participated the "OP Sail 2000" regattas completed in Amsterdam. Our Frigate was the second along the route Halifax - Amsterdam.

"Dar Młodzieży" set sail for a voyage with the GMA students. One of the objectives was participation in the Cutty Srak Tall Ships Races 2001. Our Tall Ship returned to Gdynia as the winner along the route Antwerp - Alesund. "Dar Młodzieży" also won an honorary award "Cape Horn Trophy 2001".

Departament dla Spraw Morskich Ministerstwa Spraw Wojskowych wyasygnował 247 000 dolarów na zakup i remont trzymasztowego żaglowca „Nest”, przeznaczonego na statek dla Szkoły Morskiej w Tczewie, który otrzymał nazwę „Lwów”. Pierwszym komendantem mianowano kpt.ż.w. Tadeusza Ziółkowskiego.

Minister Spraw Wojskowych gen. Józef Leśniewski podpisał akt utworzenia Szkoły Morskiej w Tczewie. Powołano kierownictwo Szkoły (1 VI szef Departamentu dla Spraw Morskich – adm. Kazimierz Porębski mianował Antoniego Garnuszewskiego dyrektorem) oraz Radę Pedagogiczną. Inspektorem SM i kierownika Wydzialu Nawigacyjnego mianowano kpt.z.w. Gustawa Kańskiego, Wydziału Mechanicznego – inż. Kazimierz Bielski.

Uroczyste otwarcie SM w Tczewie.
4 IX 1921
Uroczystość poświęcenia statku szkolnego „Lwów”. Pierwszym komendantem został kpt. ż.w. Tadeusz Ziółkowski. Z tej okazji mieszkanki Lwowa wyhaftowały banderę.
13 VIII 1923
„Lwów” przekroczył równik, co uczczono tradycyjnym „chrztem morskim”.
21 VII 1928
Prezydent RP Ignacy Mościcki wmurował akt erekcyjny pod budowę kompleksu budynków szkoły w Gdyni.
Styczeń 1929
Zatwierdzono pierwszy statut Szkoły Morskiej w Tczewie, obowiązujący do 1939 r. Szkołę określono jako wyższą szkołę zawodową.

Uroczyste podniesienie bandery na „Darze Pomorza”, połączone z jego poświęceniem. Rodzicami chrzestnymi statku byli:Maria Janta –Połczyńska i Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski.

„Dar Pomorza” wyruszył w pierwszą podróż szkoleniową do Ameryki Północnej.
16 IX 1934-3 IX 1935
„Dar Pomorza” odbył w podróż dokoła świata, statek przybył 38 746 Mil morskich , zawinął do 23 portow i 4 krotnie przekroczył równik. Absolwent SM w Tczewie, oficer „Daru Pomorza” – kpt.ż.w. Stanisław Kosko w 1937 r. opublikował książkę z tej podróży pt. „Przez trzy oceany”.
18 sierpień 1939
„Dar Pomorza” wypłynął w podróż szkoleniową po Bałtyku z kandydatami i uczniami I,II, III roku Wydziału Nawigacyjnego oraz jungami. Razem było 161 osób, w tym 21 członków załogi. Zgodnie z instrukcja dyrektora kpt.z.w. S.Koski, w momencie wybuchu wojny miał być internowany i pozostać w neutralnym porcie do jej zakończenia. Do Polski cześć załogi i żaglowiec szkolny powrócili 25 X 1945 r.
2 XII 1939
Przebywający w Wielkiej Brytanii pracownicy PSM na czele z kpt.zw. Konstantym Kowalskim – komendantem „Daru Pomorza” przedłożyli Ministerstwu Przemysłu i Handlu Prowizoryczny projekt zorganizowania Szkoły Morskiej na terenie Anglii.
Już w grudniu rozpoczęto kursy kwalifikacyjne dla oficerów, uczniów PSM i marynarzy najpierw w Southampton, następnie w Londynie. Łącznie według szacunków Jana Kazimierza Sawickiego wykształcono 318 oficerów PMH.
11 IV 1945
Departament Morski Ministerstwa Przemysłu upoważnił kpt.z.w. Konstantego Maciejewicza do przejęcia budynków szkolnych i rozpoczęcia czynności reaktywujących działalność PSM. Rok szkolny rozpoczęto z uwagi na prace remontowe 1 listopada b.r.
8 XII 1945
W Gdyni uroczyście obchodzono Święto szkoły, połączone z 25 –leciem jej istnienia. Z tej okazji odbył się tradycyjny Bal Morski z uroczystym mazurem
17 VI 1946
„Dar Pomorza” wypłynął w pierwszą podróż morską z uczniami i kandydatami Wydzialu Nawigacyjnego PSM w Gdyni pod dowództwem kpt.ż.w. Stefana Gorazdowskiego. Statek udał się do Sztokholmu w celu dokonania demagnetyzacji statku.
1 IX 1947
Decyzją Ministra żeglugi i handlu zagranicznego powstała Państwowa Szkoła Morska w Szczecinie, mająca kształcić nawigatorów, zaś w perspektywie stanowić odrębna szkołę Morską,dyrektorem wyznaczono K. Maciejewicza. W Gdyni pozostawiono Wydział Mechaniczny, z dyrektorem inż. Antonim Garnuszewskim.

Mgr Mieczysław Jurkiewicz – Naczelnik Wydziału Wychowania i Szkolnictwa Morskiego MŻ został przez ministra mianowany wicedyrektorem PSM w Gdyni, od 1 sierpnia objął funkcję dyrektora PSM w Gdyni.
23 VI, 1 VIII 1951
Zarządzeniem Prezydium Rządu, Ministerstwa żeglugi PSM w Gdyni i szczecinie przekształcono na 5-letnie technika, co wiązało się ze znacznym obniżeniem poziomu kształcenia i wieku uczni. W Szczecinie powstało: Technikum Morsko-Nawigacyjne, W Gdyni Technikum Morskie Mechaniczne. Do nauki pomaturalnej powrócono w roku szkolnym 1956/1957, postanowiono przyjmować osoby z maturą, na 3,5 –letnie studia.Powrócono do tradycyjnej nazwy Państwowa Szkoła Morska.

Zarządzeniem ministra żeglugi Państwowa Szkoła Morska otrzymała statut obowiązujący do 1968 r.
25 – 26 IX 1965 rok
W Gdyni uroczyście obchodzono 45 –lecie istnienia szkoły, połączone ze zlotem statków szkolnych – PSM w Gdyni i Szczecinie, PSRM w Gdyni i Szczecinie i innych
oraz zjazdem absolwentów mieszkających w Polsce. Był to pierwsze powojenne spotkanie absolwentów mieszkających w Polsce w szerszym gronie w murach PSM.
1 I 1968
Nastąpiło administracyjne połączenie dwóch szkół– PSM w Gdyni i Państwowej Szkoły Rybołówstwa Morskiego w Gdyni w PSM. PSM objęła budynki PSRM przy Skwerze Kościuszki, supertrawler „Jan Turlejski” (pływający z uczniami WSM do 1985 roku) i niedokończony gmach internatu przy ul. Sędzickiego.

W Dzienniku Ustaw ukazało się rozporządzenie Rady Ministrów z dnia 20 VIII 1968 w sprawie przekształcenia państwowych szkół morskich w Gdyni i Szczecinie w wyższe szkoły morskie.
2 VIII – 9 IX 1972
„Dar Pomorza” zajął 1 miejsce pod dowództwem kpt.z.w. Kazimierza Jurkiewicza w regatach „Operation-Sail 72”.
10 VII – 14 VIII 1974
„Dar Pomorza” uczestniczył w „Operacji Żagiel 74”.
14-16 VI 1980
W Gdyni odbył się I Światowy Zjazd Absolwentów Szkoły Morskiej z udziałem absolwentów Szkoły Morskiej w Tczewie i PSM w Gdyni z okresu międzywojennego.

„Dar Pomorza” wypłynął w kolejna podróż morską, uczestniczył w regatach „Operacja Żagiel 80” pod dowództwem kpt.ż.w. Tadeusza Olechnowicza.

Senat WSM w Gdyni podjął uchwałę o nadanie uczelnianej auli imienia zasłużonego kapitana, absolwenta, posła na Sejm i wykładowcy – kpt.z.w. Tadeusza Meissnera.
28 VI –23 VIII 1980
”Dar Pomorza” wygrał 2 –etapowe regaty „Operacja Żagiel 80”, jej komendant kpt.ż.w. Tadeusz Olechnowicz otrzymał od królowej holenderskiej prestiżową nagrodę „Cutty Sark Trophy”.
15-30 IX 1981
„Dar Pomorza” odbył ostatnią podróż do Finlandii.
12 XI 1981
W Stoczni Gdańskiej im. Lenina zwodowano nowy żaglowiec „Dar Młodzieży”. Matką chrzestną została Helena Jurkiewicz, żona wieloletniego komendanta „Daru Pomorza” – Kazimierza Jurkiewicza.
4 lipca 1982
Na „Darze Młodzieży” podniesiono banderę. Pierwszym komendantem został kpt. z.w. mgr Tadeusz Olechnowicz.
10 VII –8 IX 1982
„Dar Młodzieży” wypłynął w pierwszą podróż z komendantem Tadeuszem Olechnowiczem oraz studentami WSM w Gdyni. Podczas podróży uczestniczył w regatach „Operacja Żagiel 82” na trasie: Rostock, Falmouth, Lizbona, Vigo, Southampton i Bremerhaven, Gdynia.
16 XI 1982
„Dar Pomorza” przekazany został przez WSM w Gdyni Centralnemu Muzeum Morskiemu w Gdańsku, pierwszym kustoszem został wieloletni komendant –kpt.ż.w. Kazimierz Jurkiewicz.
31 III-31 VII 1984
„Dar Młodzieży“ uczestniczył w regatach z okazji 450-lecia wyprawy francuskiego żeglarza Jackuesa Cartiera. Żaglowiec wygrał w zawodach na trasie: Brest-Las Palmas –Hamilton i Hamilton-Halifax.
5-6 VI 1984
Senat WSM w Gdyni zatwierdził pierwszy Statut Uczelni za kadencji kpt.ż.w. dr Władysława Rymarza.
10 VII –18 VIII 1986
„Dar Młodzieży“ uczestniczył w „Operacji Żagiel 86”
zawijając do portów: Newcastle, Bremerhaven, Larvick, Goeteborg.
3 IX 1987-1 VI 1988
„Dar Młodzieży” pod dowództwem kpt.z.w. Leszka Wiktorowicza odbył podróż dookoła świata, przekraczając równik. Szczególne wrażenie zrobiło wejście pod pełnymi żaglami do Sydney, gdzie miała miejsce parada żaglowców.

W WSM w Gdyni obchodzono uroczyście 70 –lecie szkolnictwa morskiego cywilnego w Polsce. Obchodom towarzyszyła sesja naukowa, uroczystości historyczne i posiedzenie senatu uczelnianego.

Senat WSM w Gdyni przywrócił obchody Święta szkoły Morskiej w dniu 8 grudnia obchodzone do II wojny światowej w Polsce, w czasie wojny w Anglii i do 1950 w reaktywowanej PSM w Gdyni następnie okazjonalnie. Podczas obchodów 8 grudnia powołano Stowarzyszenie Absolwentów Szkół Morskich z przewodniczacym - mech. okręt. I kl. Lechem Rezlerem.

Senat WSM w Gdyni podjął decyzje o przystąpieniu Uczelni do budowy nowego statku szkoleniowego-badawczego.
21 III 1992
W Gdyni odbyło się pierwsze Walne Zebranie Stowarzyszenia Absolwentów Szkół Morskich. Przewodniczącym został of. mech. okręt. I kl. inż. Lech Rezler.
18 VI 1993
Z inicjatywy Stowarzyszenia Absolwentów Szkół Morskich, władz uczelni, Polskiego Towarzystwa Nautologicznego i innych odsłonięto pomnik twórcy szkolnictwa morskiego adm. Kazimierza Porębskiego. Artystka malarka – Grażyna Kilarska wykonała portret K.Porębskiego.
18 VI 1994
Zainaugurowano obchody 25-lecia WSM. Jednym z wydarzeń było „wodowanie” książki pod red. J.K. Sawickiego pt. Kadry Morskie Rzeczypospolitej. T.I. Polska Marynarka Handlowa. Absolwenci szkół morskich 1922-1992, zawierającej publikowany po raz pierwszy tak obszerny wykaz absolwentów szkoły od jej powstania do lat 90-tych.
19 VII –20 VIII 1994
„Dar Młodzieży” uczestniczył w „Operacji Żagiel 94” , zajmując I miejsce w klasie „A” (duże żaglowce) na trasie z Weymouth, przez Porto do St. Malo.
28 IV 1997
„Dar Młodzieży” zawinął do Osaki pod dowództwem kpt.ż.w. mgr inż. Henryka Śniegockiego. Podczas regat Osaka Sail 97 wygrał w klasie „A” i ogólnej punktacji oraz otrzymał nagrodę mera Osaki.
25 VIII 1997
„Dar Młodzieży” po powrocie z Osaki do Gdyni wypłynął na wody Zatoki Gdańskiej biorąc udział w regatach z okazji milenium Gdańska. Statek zacumował przy nabrzeżu Westerplatte.
8 VII 1998
Wydział Nawigacyjny WSM w Gdyni otrzymał certyfikat jakości ISO 9001:1994 nadany przez Polski Rejestr Statków.
30 XI 1998
Centralna Komisja do Spraw Tytułu Naukowego i Stopni Naukowych przyznała Wydziałowi Administracyjnemu WSM w Gdyni uprawnienia do nadawania stopnia naukowego doktora nauk ekonomicznych w zakresie towaroznawstwa.
27 V 1999
Senat WSM w Gdyni uchwalił wycofanie z eksploatacji 2 statków instrumentalnych: „Horyzont” (od 30 V 199) i „Zenit” (od 31 VIII 1999), które pływały od początku lat sześćdziesiątych w Szkole Rybołówstwa Morskiego, od 1 I 1969 jako statki WSM w Gdyni.

Senat WSM w Gdyni wyraził zgodę na przystąpienie WSM w Gdyni do Międzynarodowego Stowarzyszenia Wyższych Uczelni Morskich (IAMU).

„Dar Młodzieży” wypłynął w kolejną podroż, podczas której uczestniczył w regatach OP Sail 2000.

„Dar Młodzieży” zajął pierwsze miejsce w zawodach na trasie Southampton-Cadiz.
28 IV 2000
Uroczyste podniesienie bandery na statku szkoleniowo –badawczym „Horyzont II” z udziałem JM Rektora Piotra Przybyłowskiego. Matka chrzestna była Hanna Gronkiewicz – Waltz –Prezesa NBP. Pierwszym kapitanem został kpt.ż.w. mgr inż. Julian Witkowski –wieloletni dowódca „Horyzonta”. Statek zbudowano w Gdańskiej Stoczni Remontowej im. Józefa Piłsudskiego.

„Dar Młodzieży” podczas pobytu w Nowym Yorku uczestniczył w paradzie żaglowców w czasie trwania OP Sail 2000, pod dowództwem kpt.ż.w. dr hab. Marka Szymońskiego.

„Dar Młodzieży” podczas pobytu w Bostonie uczestniczył w paradzie żaglowców w czasie trwania OP Sail 2000. Prof. dr hab. inz. Piotr Przybyłowski – rektor WSM w Gdyni otrzymał od przedstawiciela gubernatora tego miasta dyplom uznania dla żaglowca.
24 VIII 2000
W Amsterdamie zakończono regaty OP Sail 2000 z udziałem m.in. „Daru Młodzieży”. Fregata na trasie Halifax-Amsterdam zajęła drugie miejsce.

Centralna Komisja do Spraw Tytułu Naukowego i Stopni Naukowych przyznała uprawnienia do nadawania stopnia naukowego doktora nauk technicznych w dyscyplinie: budowa i eksploatacja maszyn Wydziałowi Mechanicznemu.

Uchwałą Senatu WSM w Gdyni zatwierdzono nazwę Akademia Morska w Gdyni.
27 VI 2001
„Dar Młodzieży” wypłynął w podróż ze studentami WSM, której jednym z celów był udział w regatach Cutty Sark Tall Ship s Races 2001. Do Gdyni powrócono 10 IX t.r. zajmując 1 miejsce w regatach na trasie Antwerpia-Alesund. Żaglowiec zdobył honorową nagrodę „Cape Horn Trophy 2001”.

Prezydent RP –Aleksander Kwaśniewski podpisał ustawę o zmianie nazwy z dniem 1 I 2002 z Wyższa Szkoła Morska na Akademia Morska.

Rektor Akademii Morskiej w Gdyni – prof. dr hab. inż. Piotr Przybyłowski oraz st. mech. inż. Jan Mizgalski – absolwent Wydziału Mechanicznego PSM w Gdyni z 1933 i najlepsi studenci- Małgorzata Pigłowska (stypendium Ministra Infrastruktury) i Maciej Stępień dokonali odsłonięcia nowej nazwy na frontonie głównego gmachu, przy ulicy Morskiej 83. z tej okazji miało miejsce pierwsze uroczyste posiedzenie Senatu Akademii Morskiej w Gdyni.
